Pregnancy Update Week 28-32
Hi everyone,
Well, I thought it was time for another update on this pregnancy thing. My last post was pretty non-eventful. The last 5 weeks have created lots of changes. The "honeymoon" phase of the 2nd trimester is over.
At week 28 I failed my glucose tolerance test and had to be tested a second time for gestational diabetes. This entailed a 3 hour glucose test conducted once every hour. I also had to fast for 12 hours prior. GOOD NEWS though....I passed the second test and do not have gestational diabetes. I strongly recommend not eating before your initial test. They tell you that you can but I beg to differ. Anyway, I am very relieved.
So, once over that small hump things were pretty good. However, at about week 30 I started to notice some minor hip aches at night. No big deal. Now though by week 32 that pain has gotten much worse. Sleeping has become a problem and just this week the round ligaments have also started stretching so the groin area also hurts. I saw a physical therapist and she said to continue to walk and do gentle exercises that do not aggravate my pain and mild sciatica. This is a normal part of pregnancy and due to the 30 lb basketball in the front of my body and laxity occurring to prepare for birth there is not much we can do about this. The lack of sleep is good prep for once baby arrives I suppose.
I have modified my workouts to walking 2 to 3 times per day for 20 minutes at a very moderate rate and my strength training now consists of mainly upper body work, a few hip exercises the PT recommended, and ball squats. Lunge and many yoga moves are out of the question for me for the next few weeks.
This is a good lesson in listening to your body and modifying your workout when needed. I am very sad to give up my squats and lunges and my intensity but am thankful I am able to move and will have much greater respect for my pregnant clients now!! Who knew carrying a baby was so much work.
Hopefully, the next update will be great news of little Josie's arrival. I will then continue my entries to tell you how getting back in shape after baby is going.
Stay healthy,
Amy
