Tips to avoid weight gain this holiday season

It is official the holidays are upon us.  Next, week is Thanksgiving and everyone is worried about gaining that extra 5 lbs between now and Christmas.  So, I thought I would make a list of tips to help you avoid keep on track and avoid those extra pounds.

1.  Try not to overindulge in alcohol or caffeine.  Try spacing a glass of water in between each drink.

2.  Take small portions but do not skip any of your favorites.  Enjoy and treat yourself but within moderation.

3.  Try to keep active.  Enlist in the help of a friend to exercise with or shorten your workouts if need be but try not to stop exercising during this busy season.   Incorporate new activities into your holiday rituals.  Think Turkey Trot Run or Reindeer Shuffle.  These are events that you can do with your family or friends in place of or in conjuction with traditional holiday parties.  Even try snowshoeing or ice skating.

4.  Give yourself a break.  This is not the time to beat yourself up or set lofty weight loss goals.

5.  Try to make "lower" calorie choices for other meals if you know you will be indulging at a party.  Such as a light soup or salad.  Also, eat a healthy snack before a big event.  Do not starve yourself or you will overindulge.

I hope these simple tips will help.  Enjoy the festivities.
